What makes this skinny?
We've made these fresh style meaning they only have four ingredients: tequila, lime juice, agave nectar and mango. Most margaritas will include an orange liqueur (or orange liquor) like triple sec or Grand Marnier which increases the sweetness and the alcohol level. It also increases the calories. Same goes for most margarita mix options.
We'd call this skinn-ier. Mango has a distinct flavor but it can also not be very sweet. So adding some agave nectar helps give a sweetness.
As a comparison, a regular mango margarita can be up to 409 calories with 78 grams of sugar. Ours is 211 calories and 25 grams sugar. In WW Personal Points, our version is 6 personal points versus 23 personal points for a standard mango margarita as listed in the WW app.
Recipe Ingredient Notes
Tequila. Use silver tequila or tequila blanco which are not aged and have a lighter flavor. Also use a high-quality tequila. You'll feel better the next morning!
Fresh lime juice. Taking a few minutes to freshly squeeze limes really makes a difference in the flavor and only takes a matter of minutes. Using a hand held juicer extracts the juice completely and quickly.
Agave nectar. This sweetener is perfect for fresh-style margs. It's harvested from the agave plant which is also used in the making of tequila. It’s low on the glycemic index so won’t spike your blood sugar.
Fresh mangoes. A key to the flavor of this mango margaritas recipe is the ripeness of the mangoes. If they are not ripe they will be difficult to muddle and won't add much flavor so pick ripe mangoes! Peel and cut into mango chunks.
Ice. Regular ice cubes should be used when preparing the cocktail. Regular or crushed ice can be used in the serving glasses.
Supplies
Cocktail shaker or quart mason jar. If you have a cocktail shaker already, perfect! If not, just use a quart mason jar with lid to shake the margarita.
Muddler. This is a special mixology (bar) tool that allows pressing ingredients together to extract their flavors.
How to make a Mango Margarita - Step-by-Step
If you'd like a salt rimmed glass do that first (instructions below).
STEP 1. Muddle
Add the mango cubes to the shaker (photo 1). Muddle to release the juice and smash the fruit (photo 2).
STEP 2. Shake
Add the tequila, lime juice and agave to the cocktail shaker along with a cup of ice (photo 3). Put the lid on and give it a really good shake for 15-20 seconds (photo 4).
STEP 3. Strain
Strain over fresh ice in a double old fashioned glass or margarita glass (or the salt rimmed glass if you prepared one). Garnish with lime wedge or lime wheel.
A spicy twist!
If you love a little kick of heat in your cocktails add some chipotle en adobo to the mix for a spicy mango margarita. Add ½ teaspoon of adobo sauce (from a can of chipotle en adobo) when muddling the mango.
For a little bit more or instead, add some chipotle chili powder to the salt rim of your glass.
How to Salt a Cocktail Glass Rim
Serving margaritas with a salted rim is a personal choice. These are great with a salted rim or an unsalted rim. Here's how to do it:
Rimming the glass with salt is optional. Rim the glass before making the margaritas.
- Run some lime juice along the rim of the glass
- Turn it upside down in a small plate of margarita salt. NOTE: have enough salt in the plate that the rim will be easily covered (⅛-1/4-inch deep)
- Turn the glass from side to side to coat the rim
- Turn the glass right side up and allow to sit for the salt to harden onto the rim before pouring in the margarita
