What makes this skinny?
Only apples are spices are used. No oil or added sugar in this air fryer apple chips recipe.
Recipe Ingredients Notes
Apples. You'll need 3 large apples. The apples will shrink as they cook so starting large is key. Select sweet apples that are all the same size for even cooking times (suggested type of apples listed below).
Best apples for Apple Chips
Choosing sweet apples with good structure that will hold up to dehydrating (which is essentially what occurs to make the apple chips) is key. Here are some favorite apples that are all available at the grocery store:
- Honeycrisp
- Pink Lady
- Gala
- Fuji
- Golden Delicious
- Granny Smith - try these if you love tart apple flavor
Pass on Red Delicious apples. They don't have much flavor and their consistency isn't the best for apple chips.
How to make Air Fryer Apple Chips - Step-by-Step
These easy air fryer apple chips only require 3 step instructions!
STEP 1. Preparation
Slice the rinsed and dried apples into ⅛-inch thin slices using a mandoline slicer (photo 1).
Combine the cinnamon, ginger and salt in a small bowl; mix together.
Preheat the air fryer to 300 degrees fahrenheit.
STEP 2. Cook
Place some of the thin apple slices in a single layer in the air fryer basket. NOTE: they will shrink as they cook so can overlap just a bit but shouldn't overlap much.
Sprinkle the tops with some of the spice mixture (photo 2).
Set the time for 10 minutes and cook on 300 degrees. Turn the chips over at 5 minutes and monitor for doneness. The chips can be done anywhere from 10-15 minutes depending on the air fryer being used and the apple size. Turn the chips over every 5 minutes while cooking (photo 3).
Repeat for the remaining apple slices.
STEP 3. Cool
This step is key for crisp apple chips!
Remove from the air fryer and place on a wire cooling rack for the chips to crisp up (takes 1-2 mintues). Enjoy!
Pro Tips for making perfect Apple Chips
Use a mandoline slicer. The chips should be ⅛-inch thick. It's very difficult to uniformly slice apples by hand to that thickness even using a sharp knife. A mandoline allows thinly slicing produce to any thickness. It's a great affordable kitchen tool.
The cooling makes the chips crisp. When the apples come out of the air fryer they will be limp feeling not crisp. Place them on a wire cooling rack and they crisp in 1-2 minutes. This is a key step to make the chips.
Rinse and dry apples before starting. Since the apples will not be peeled give them a good rinse before starting the recipe.
Core the apples before starting. This is optional but an easy way to remove the core and seeds.
Use an air fryer trivet to weight the apple slices. As the apples begin to cook they become very light and will move around in the air fryer. I use this air fryer trivet upside down on top of the apples to hole them in place. This is optional but makes it easier to flip them over as well as ensures they will cook evenly.
Every air fryer cooks differently. In our testing we've found cooking times can range depending on the air fryer being used, the size of the apples and how thick the apple slices are. Use the color of the cooked cinnamon apple chips as a guide of doneness. The final chips should be a golden color and will crisp on the cooling rack after cooking. Do not use the texture out of the air fryer after cooking as the final indicator.
Cook in batches. Because the apple chips need to be in a single layer you'll cook them in batches. Each batch will take 12-15 minutes cook time and one large apple is around 3 batches. They are perfect to make when meal prepping or other cooking tasks.
Watch the chips as they cook. It's important to monitor the chips during cooking to ensure they don't burn. Because the cooking time can vary keeping an eye on them will lead to the best end result.
How to make Apple Chips in the oven
STEP 1. Preparation
Preheat the oven to 200 degrees F.
Place apple slices in one single layer on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Sprinkle some of the spice mixture on top of each slice.
STEP 2. Bake
Bake for 2-½ to 3 hours until the apple slices are crispy, turning slices over halfway through cooking.
Variations
Try different spices. Apple pie spice for instance. Any spices you love with apple can be sprinkled on before cooking. Sweet apples are delicious without any spices too in homemade apple chips.
How many apple chips does this recipe make?
One large apple makes about 3 cups of chips. So the entire recipe makes around 9 cups. The recipe can be increased or decreased to make any amount following the recipe instructions.
Frequently Asked Questions
No. The chips are so thin you won't notice the peel at all when they are cooked.
It's totally up to you. Using an apple corer is an easy way to remove the core and seeds before cooking. It's easy to remove the seeds after the apples have been sliced.
We tested these in a few different types but the main air fryer we use is a Cosori 5.8 quart air fryer.
Yes! The important part is to keep them in an airtight container. Moisture will change their texture. Freeze for up to 2 months and thaw in the refrigerator.
How to Store
Store in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 5 days. They may soften while stored. Because they are not fully dehydrated they need to be refrigerated.
