Blue cheese fans will agree it has that perfect creamy element that does delicious double duty for green salad (or a favorite wedge salad) and for vegetable dips. Making your own blue cheese dressing is satisfying and a good choice instead of the bottled stuff.

What makes this skinny?
Regular blue cheese dressing has aproximately 75 calories in 1 tablespoon. Our homemade version has 19 calories in 1 tablespoon, 38 calories for a 2 tablespoon serving.
We dumped the usual mayonnaise, heavy cream and high fat sour cream for this easy recipe. Using non-fat Greek yogurt creates a great consistency and gives tangy flavor with fewer calories. Reduced fat buttermilk blends the dressing into a creamy texture and also adds some tang.
Recipe Ingredients Notes
Blue cheese crumbles. You'll need ¾ cup and can buy the blue cheese already crumbled which is a great time saver. You'll find them in a small plastic container with the other cheese at the grocery store. If you buy a wedge of blue cheese instead be sure to break it into very small pieces.
Reduced fat blue cheese crumbles may also be used for further calorie savings. They are not as easy to find in the grocery store so the nutritional info for this recipe is based on regular blue cheese crumbles.
Non fat plain Greek yogurt. This thick tangy yogurt is perfect for making thicker dressings or sauces. We love Chobani brand. It has a wonderful texture and flavor. Any plain non-fat Greek yogurt brand will work.
Reduced fat buttermilk. Buttermilk adds to the tangy flavor and creamy consistency. Be sure to use reduced fat.

Want it smooth? After making the dressing use and immersion blender to make it smoother.
Want a homemade chunky blue cheese dressing? Start with a wedge of blue cheese from the grocery store and break it into pieces yourself. You can control the size of the pieces and make the perfect blue cheese dressing for YOU!
How to Use it
This delicious blue cheese dressing recipe is perfect on everything from a classic wedge salad to using it as a dipping sauce.
- For dipping on a vegetable platter
- Great with our Air Fryer Chicken Tenders
- On chicken wings, cauliflower wings or buffalo wings
Pro Tips
Chill dressing before using. The flavor and consistency of the dressing is best after chilling at least 2 hours. It allows time for the flavors to blend together and the dressing to thicken.
Frequently Asked Questions
There are several different kinds of blue cheese ranging from mild flavor to those with stronger flavor. Any blue cheese will work but if you like a stronger cheese go for a sheep's milk Roquefort from France or cow's milk Gorgonzola (from Italy). These are good for a chunkier dressing.
Danish Blue Cheese is also popular. Ask for samples from the cheese department of your grocery store to find which one you love!
How to Store
Store in an airtight container (a sealed jar is perfect) in the refrigerator for up to 2 weeks.

The buttermilk adds flavor and tanginess that regular milk would not. I would really recommend making the recipe with buttermilk.
