Air Fryer Boiled Eggs?
Instead of hot boiling water the air fryer cooks with convection technology. The heating element heats the air in the kitchen appliance which circulates hot air around the food to cook it without water or actual frying in oil. So yes they aren't technically 'boiled'.
This works wonderfully for making hard boiled eggs. We've found this air frying eggs recipe to be a best way to make boiled eggs. We've never had over cooked egg yolks with a green ring around them (a sign of an overcooked yolk).
Usually I always find some shells crack when actually boiling eggs and have never had that happen in the air fryer.
What makes this skinny?
This recipe does not change the calories in hard boiled eggs but it does offer an easier method for those in the air fryer world. An easy recipe is one we are more likely to make too.
Hard boiled eggs are a healthy option to eat for a snack or to add to other recipes. With this new favorite way to make them it's easy to make a dozen eggs to last the week by spending just 17 minutes cooking time.
What type of eggs to use
Any eggs work with this method. Brown eggs or white eggs. In our recipe testing we've found farm eggs can differ in results depending on the size of the eggs and the thickness of the outer shell of the egg.
If you use farm eggs or eggs from backyard chickens you may need to experiment with different times. I suggest doing a one or two egg test run to check the results and adjust from that for larger batches.
Always start with clean eggs when using any eggs especially farm eggs. Eggs in the grocery store have been cleaned before selling them (but you can still rinse and dry them before starting).
All Air Fryers are Different
This is important to know when making recipes in the air fryer. Each air fryer model and wattage amount will make a slight difference when cooking air fryer recipes.
We did our recipe testing in a Cosori 5.8 quart air fryer which uses 1700 watts. Other machines may vary in terms of how long it takes to get the best results.
Ice Water Bath
This step is key for easy peeling. It also prevents overcooked eggs by stopping the cooking process which can continue after the eggs are removed from the air fryer. The peel can be removed easily after the eggs have fully cooled.
How to make Air Fryer Hard Boiled Eggs - Step-by-Step
STEP 1. Preheat the air fryer
Preheat the air fryer to 270 degrees F. NOTE: in our testing this step made the difference between the eggs being fully cooked or still with jammy yolks.
STEP 2. Cook the eggs
The eggs can be placed directly in the basked of the air fryer or on an air fryer wire rack which holds them in place. Cook for 17 minutes at 270 degrees.
STEP 3. Ice water bath
When the eggs are almost done cooking prepare an ice bath by filling a large bowl with cold water and ice. As soon as the eggs are done use tongs to place them into the ice bath.
Leave them in the bowl of ice water bath until completely cold to the touch; about 5 minutes. They can be stored or peeled at this point.
How to make jammy yolk eggs
If you love that type of egg that's cooked more than a soft boiled egg but not fully like a hard boiled egg (they have a jammy consistency to the yolk), those are also easy to make in the air fryer.
Do not preheat the air fryer. Cook at 270 degrees for 16 minutes then use an ice water bath. The eggs will be perfectly cooked with a softer cooked yolk (great on avocado toast with some everything bagel seasoning).
Pro Tips
Don't overcrowd the air fryer basket. The eggs will cook best with a bit of room in the air fryer basket.
Use tongs. The cooked eggs will be very hot. Use tongs to move them to the ice water bath.
Frequently Asked Questions
The ice bath step does two things. It stops the cooking process (the eggs continue to cook after being taken out of the air fryer until they cool) and it makes the eggs easy to peel. So though this step can be skipped we think you'll have the best results by doing it.
In my research I've read it can be from residue in the air fryer from prior frying sessions or a reaction from the eggs due to the circulating air in the air fryer. Most importantly it's normal. You can wipe off the egg shells and they are completely safe to eat.
How to Store
Store cooled cooked air fryer hard boiled eggs in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 1 week. Using a hard-sided container will prevent the shells from cracking from other items in the refrigerator.
The cooked eggs can also be stored peeled. Place in a container with a damp paper towel on the bottom and top of the container to keep eggs moist. Or store in a bowl of cold water in the refrigerator. The water will need to be replaced daily. Peeled eggs should only be kept up to 2 days.
