You probably have heard before that it takes 21 days to develop a new habit. It actually takes 21 days to start to develop a lasting habit. But 21 days is key.
It’s long enough to practice something new enough times that you’ll continue to repeat it if you want to.
It’s not so long that you’ll feel like there is no way to be successful.
Changing an old habit or starting a new one starts with three things:
- a clear achievable goal
But it doesn’t have to be hard. In fact it shouldn’t be.
Have you ever taken a hike up a steep hill? At a certain point it gets really hard. To make it through you just have to focus putting one foot in front of the other. Breaking it down to bite size actions you can do to get to the end goal.
You CAN take just one more step, then just one more. That’s much easier than focusing on the top of the mountain from the start of the climb. Otherwise it’s overwhelming and almost impossible to psyche up to get going.
Building a habit is the same thing. Building a foundation on simple, easy changes sets you up for success!
