When using an Instant Pot or pressure cooker above 2000 feet it's necessary to adjust cooking times. The rule of thumb is:
For every 1,000 feet ABOVE 2,000 feet elevation, the cooking time must be increased by 5 percent.
This chart will help make figuring that out easier:
| Altitude OR Above | Increase cooking time by | OR multiple time by |
|---|---|---|
| 2000 | 5% | 1.05 |
| 3000 | 10% | 1.10 |
| 4000 | 15% | 1.15 |
| 5000 | 20% | 1.20 |
| 6000 | 25% | 1.25 |
| 7000 | 30% | 1.30 |
| 8000 | 35% | 1.35 |
How to Calculate
The easiest way to calculate is to find your altitude, and multiple the recipe cooking time by the number in the last column.
For instance if I am making Instant Pot Turkey Breast Roast and I live at 5,400 feet altitude I'll multipy:
29 minutes cooking time (the recipe's original cooking time) x 1.20 = 34.8 adjusted cooking time (I would round up to 35 minutes)
